Frigidaire FFHS2322MS: Continuing a Long Tradition

Frigidaire FFHS2322MSWhen your brand name becomes synonymous in describing a generic product, you know that you’ve arrived. Since it started as the Guardian Frigerator Company in 1916, rolling out the first self-contained refrigerator in the market, Frigidaire has entered the modern English lexicon to describe refrigerators, much like Coca-cola comes to mind first when talking about sodas. The Frigidaire FFHS2322MS continues the company’s tradition of manufacturing high-quality products for the best consumer experience.

Survival of the fittest

You can’t possibly survive for nearly 100 years without constantly innovating and evolving. Being synonymous with the word refrigerator is not without basis. Frigidaire is actually responsible for most of the technology being adopted by modern products today. The company manufactured the first home food freezer, the first room air conditioner, and the color theme for home appliances.

The Frigidaire FFHS2322MS features what it calls a “store-more organization system,” which means exactly as it sounds. You have the gallon door (so called because they hold larger items measured by the gallon), adjustable door bins, and stacked drawers that allow you to easily access what you need to find.

With unmatched humidity-control on the crisper drawer, you can store and maintain the freshness of vegetables and fruits for longer periods of time. A water filtration system also provides you with cleaner water, which is perfect for small kids whose body immunities are still developing. The spill-safe shelves of Frigidaire FFHS2322MS will avoid spillage into the kitchen floor while its energy saving feature will automatically be activated if the refrigerator is not opened for 24 hours.

Floating Air Cleaning Appliance Wins Electrolux Design Lab 2012

Official Electrolux Press Release:

A hands-free stirring utensil. A tasting spoon that tells you what ingredient is lacking. This is what the future of household and cooking appliances looks like at the 10th annual Electrolux Design Lab competition.

Aeroball by Jan Ankiersztajn from Poland was awarded first prize in finals at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.

The Electrolux Design Lab 2012 jury, comprising Design Director at Electrolux Thomas Johansson, award winning chef Davide Oldani, distinguished designer Dante Donegani and popular design blogger Kelly Beall, selected the winner from ten global finalists. The winning concept is a collection of luminescent, hovering balls that can filter and fragrance the air in a room. They float using helium and drift down to the ground when they are ready to be changed.

The jury was impressed with how the student’s creative and insightful thinking reflected this year’s theme, Design Experience, and how successfully the concept met the challenge of creating a holistic sensorial experience. “We rely on our senses for almost everything, so considering the senses is an important factor when designing appliances,” says Thomas Johansson, head of the jury. “This year’s winning concept is a truly innovative concept that uses space in a unique way and delights our surroundings. It also changes our perception of an air cleaner, because it is delicate in aesthetics, it is emotional and also relevant, because it addresses the consumer’s needs.”

The second prize in the competition went to Ben de la Roche from New Zealand. His design concept is a refrigerated wall that allows the user to press storage containers and bottles directly into the wall. Impress uses thermo-acoustic technology and gases such as argon and helium that are non-ozone depleting and harmless to the environment. The jury’s motivation was: “Impress is a visual experience that is energy saving and simplifies the user’s life.”

Third prize went to Tastee by Christopher Holm-Hansen, from Denmark. His design concept is a taste indicator, in the form of a spoon, that utilizes receptors based on the human taste bud to tell you what ingredients you need to improve your cooking. The jury’s motivation was: “Tastee is a tool that offers guidance for your palate in order to bring out the chef that is inside of you.” People’s Choice Award went to Tastee after receiving over 1,000 unique votes on Facebook.

Electrolux Design Lab is an annual global design competition open to undergraduate and graduate design students world-wide. Established in 2003, the competition is encouraging and facilitating young designers in the pursuit of innovative home appliance design.

“Creating new value and propositions is what innovative design is all about. Electrolux is committed to innovation in design, research and development and Electrolux Design Lab is one way of exploring new arising ideas. In addition the competition is a chance for us to meet the design talent of tomorrow”, said Stefano Marzano, Chief Design Officer at Electrolux.

Electrolux Design Lab 2012 challenged design students to draw inspiration from professional experience creators such as chefs, architects, interior designers and hotel designers to design future home appliances that will provide a fuller sensory experience. The brief for 2012 was looking for concepts that best reflect Electrolux proud heritage of Scandinavian Design whilst working to create new home appliances that stimulate, engage and enlighten all of our senses. The jury considered entries based on intuitive design, innovation and consumer insight.

One of the purposes of the competition is to function as an innovative arena for the introduction of new talents and products to the market. First prize is EUR 5,000 and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center. Second prize is EUR 3,000 and third prize of EUR 2,000.

Online Appliance Retailer, Goedeker’s, Kicks Out Coupon Sites

Coupon Sites

Affiliate marketing has seen many twists and turns in the last decade.

The advent of the coupon site is probably one of the trickiest.

Coupon sites drive tons of traffic to advertisers’ sites.

But is it worth it for the advertisers to accept coupon sites as affiliates through networks like Google Affiliate Network or Commission Junction?

Many advertiser sites are saying no. One such advertiser is Goedeker’s, a large online appliance retailer.

Why Kick Out Coupon Sites?

“Our data showed we were giving away the affiliate fee to coupon sites instead of having them earn it,” says Matt Davids, Goedeker’s affiliate manager.

“We discovered customers were finding our site through our own PPC, and then searching for coupon and promo codes. Once the customer found the coupon code on the coupon site, they would click through that link back to our site.”

So, why was this a problem for Goedeker’s?

“We were paying twice for the customer,” continues Davids, “it’s as simple as that.”

“Also, all of our coupons codes are available on our site. A customer doesn’t have to leave Goedekers.com to get a good deal. Not to mention, most coupon sites list coupons from stores they are not affiliates with because of the traffic they get from the keywords.”

Goedeker’s Coupon Page

Goedeker’s solution was to remove the coupon sites as affiliates and create their own Goedeker’s coupon code page.

“Yes, that’s it,” says Davids, “we created our own coupon page at Goedeker’s and began building links to it.”

Some would consider this a risky move, correct?

“Possibly,” admits Davids.

“But by putting this strategy in place, it will allow us to offer more coupons and promo codes which will be better for our customers. And that’s truly our goal. We want to provide our customers with the best deal.”

“Why should they go to another site when we have all the coupons they need?”

Building a Home Theater

I have many fond memories from childhood of sitting in a movie theater with buttered popcorn, which helped shape my love for cinema as an adult. But the rising cost in ticket prices, my growing irritability with children kicking the back of my seat, and ringing cell phones from across the theater have made it more difficult to enjoy the experience.

That’s why my home theater has become such an asset in my life. I created the closest replica of the cinema experience in my home that I could. For a home theater experience that your friends will envy, you need some basic movie theater elements combined with a personalized, cozy venue.

Home Theater Seating

The “lazy-boy chair” design is typical of home theaters, and for good reason. Not only are they comfortable, but you can recline and put up your feet, a feature movie theaters can’t accommodate.

For something simple and reasonably inexpensive, reclining theater-style chairs (usually attached by the arms in groups of three) can be found for under $1,500 for a group of three. Those looking for something a little more unique can find something more customized. A single leather theater chair can reach over $1,400.

Leather or another easy-to-clean fabric is a must and don’t forget the cup holders. For those with kids or teenagers, investing in an over-sized beanbag for the floor is a good idea, allowing for fun and variety in seating.

Don’t Forget the Snacks

A large part of the movie theater experience is undeniably the snacks. To build a luxurious home theater, playing with the design to include concessions is a must. At the very least, a small mini fridge with sodas and frozen Junior Mints are the essentials. If you’re willing to go beyond that, try getting a popcorn machine. They range in price from $80 to over $200, depending on the style and quality of your machine. A couple shelves stocked with classic theater candies is a good idea as well.

Time for the Show!

After putting in the time and money that it takes to make a home theater, it’s important to have as many viewing opportunities as possible. Subscribing to a movie distributer like Blockbuster @Home with DISH will keep everyone up-to-date on the latest and greatest blockbuster hits. Blockbuster @Home is a service through DISH that users can subscribe to for access to Blockbuster’s treasure trove of movies, shows and games. Depending on the subscription, users can get streaming movies and TV series, Blu-ray movies mailed to their doorstep, and premium channels like STARZ and Encore Suspense.

Possible Additional Home Remodels

They aren’t essential, but you can consider home remodels to enhance your theater. Flooring is an important choice; will it be sleek hardwood or cozy carpet? Installing dimmers with the lights to allow for varying brightness is a must.

Researching the right projector and screen for your space will need to be done and will create a more realistic theater experience than having a large television screen.  When looking for projectors, look at speakers that can handle everything from the booming sounds of an explosion to the quiet details of birds chirping in the background. Having quality speakers that surround the viewers will intensify the viewing experience and bring that movie theater quality home.

Developing a quality theater at home can not only give you enjoyable movie viewing experiences, but can bond family and friends. What other home theater necessities or luxuries have you found necessary for taking the movie theater experience home?

Bosch Reveals Top 5 Dishwasher Fight Starters

Bosch SHX68R55UC dishwasherTo pre-rinse or not to pre-rinse? That question has sparked sighs of exasperation from many loving relationships, according to a survey from Bosch Home Appliances. The national survey of 2,000 adults over the age of 18 was conducted for Bosch by Harris Interactive. The survey found that more than 40% of Americans fight about how to load the dishwasher.

Since Bosch aims to make our lives easier with their home appliances, they’ve taken aim at the top 5 reasons people fight over the dishwasher and provided us with some useful advice:

The fight: Pre-rinse or don’t pre-rinse?
The answer: Don’t pre-rinse.

The reason: The detergent needs something to cling to in order to avoid scratching your dishes. So save some water and some time and skip the pre-rinse. Instead, use that time to argue about how to load the dishwasher. Oh, wait….

The fight: Leave some room between dishes or cram it in like a New York subway?
The answer: Leave some room.

The reason: Sorry, ladies. Survey results indicate that women are more likely to want to cram as much into the dishwasher as they possibly can. However, for best results, leave some room for the water to circulate. Also, make sure that spray arms are not impeded.

The fight: Knife point up or point down?
The answer: Point down.

The reason: Safety first. Your utensil slots should have enough holes to hit the pointy utensils without having to have the blade exposed above the container edge. And remember: the time it takes to glance at a knife to make sure it’s clean is less than the time it takes to clean the blood from everything when you slice your hand open on an exposed blade. Grisly, but true.

The fight: A place for everything, and everything in its place. Or is it?
The answer: Whichever you want, so long as the dishes are separated.

The reason: The tines in the dishwasher do more than just prop up your plates. They help ensure sufficient spacing between dishes so that everything gets clean. So put your cups wherever you want – as long as they don’t break any of the rules you’ve read up to this point.

The fight: Plastics above or below?
The answer: Doesn’t matter.

The reason: Most dishwashers have hidden heating elements, so the probability of plastics on the top shelf melting is extremely low. This is, of course, up to your discretion (is it worth the icy stare to insist, or just go with the flow?).

Excuses, excuses

Guys, now would be a good time to distract your roommate or significant other. The survey also revealed that 38% of men find excuses to get out of loading the dishwasher. The most common excuses include:

  • “I cooked, so you should do the cleanup.” (16%)
  • “I just don’t feel like it.” (Too lazy – 12%)
  • “I have more important things to do.” (Time is too valuable – 10%)

If your answer is in one of the last two points… well… your Scrabble board might contain this:
