The majority of households work on water meters, so the only way to reduce the amount of money we spend annually on water utility bills is to reduce the amount of water we use.
Around 70% of the water we use in the household is used in the bathroom, and a quarter of our heating bills heating the water in our homes it’s certainly worth finding new and thoughtful ways to reduce the water usage and ultimately reduce the cost of our utility bills.
Small Changes in the Bathroom
You don’t necessarily have to install a new toilet in your bathroom to reduce the amount of water wasted when flushing; by retrofitting a dual-flush syphon on your toilet you can save up to 2,000 gallons of water each year and these useful fittings only cost around $30!
It’s common knowledge that showering uses less water than taking a bath, but this statement is relative. Most showerheads are actually not very efficient when it comes to water conservation so there’s a good chance that people who like to take a long shower are using much more water than they would ever use in the bath. In many households, the attic is just a space to put away that unused furniture, unwanted clutter and boxes of sentimental items that we just can’t bring ourselves to throw away. This space is something that rarely crosses our minds, but if left un-insulated it can be a major cause of heat loss in the home and also add a significant chunk onto our energy bills.
A poorly insulated house loses about a quarter of its heat through the roof, which can up your heating bills by almost $250 a year. Many people don’t like the idea of insulating their attic; be it because they think it’s too difficult or expensive, but this is simply not the case. Insulating your attic is the most cost-effective and energy saving change you can make to your home and with so many sound solutions on the market it’s hard to find a reason not to! Not only will you shave huge amounts of money off your heating bill, but you will create a warm, cosy home for the winter whilst simultaneously eliminating that damp-creating condensation.
Types of Insulation
There are so many different materials you can use to properly insulate your home; from affordable glass fibre insulation which is made from recycled glass, to 100% natural sheep’s wool. Insulated boards can be installed in the attic to keep the heat in yet still keep a nice flat area to store away those cluttorsome boxes and decorations. Continue reading →
All people want to feel secure in their own home. No matter where somebody lives, there is always the uneasy thought that someone could break in, so it’s important to take the right security measures for your property and your family.
Security measures for your home
The first thing to consider is getting good-quality locks fitted onto doors and windows, as these are likely to be the main access points for any intruder. They will need to comply with insurance industry standards to ensure that you are covered in the event of a claim.
Back or side doors will also need to have proper security and it is worth installing locks on the top floor windows too. A chain on the inside of the door will act as a further barrier to anyone trying to get in. Every evening before going to bed, remember to check that you have locked up the house. Keep keys out of sight and reach so they can’t be fished through a letterbox, but also make sure you can get your hands on them easily in case you need to get out of your house in an emergency. Whatever climate you live in, home insulation is a necessity. Decent home insulation will help keep your house warm during colder weather and help to cool it down when it is hot outside. This can make a positive impact on your energy bills and many people have made home insulation the top priority on their list of home improvements.
Different ways to insulate
Insulating walls, roofs and windows tend to be the first point of call for home insulation. There has been a huge amount of media coverage about just how much you could save by insulating your home. Insulating lofts and walls certainly makes a significant difference to your household economy; however, many people are neglecting to think about how to insulate the largest points of access to their homes.
It’s not the most interesting or stylish room in the house, but the garage is one of the most important spaces when it comes to insulation. Often garages are an integral part of the home’s design and frequently have rooms built above them, yet many people do not consider the importance of getting this space insulated along with the rest of the house. Studies have shown that the average lifetime of a washing machine is 10 years. You can ensure that your washing machine won’t cause any troubles over its lifetime by following a few maintenance steps.
I live in an area where water is very hard, so if I want to keep my machine running for a long time, I have to put in quite some effort! To keep my washing machine in good condition, here is the routine maintenance that I have put in place.
Materials required:
A pair of gloves
A brush
A soft sponge
Dishwashing liquid
1 liter of white vinegar
A little bleach
A soft cloth
In every wash cycle:
- I put 3/4 of a glass of white vinegar instead of fabric softener. Not only does this soften the calcium in machine, but it also acts as an anti-limescale agent. I no longer use any anti- limescale pellets, as they are more aggressive on the washer than on the limescale. Continue reading →

Many people delay decorating because home refurbishment could cost thousands or more. With so many homes struggling to pay the bills, an expensive renovation is the last thing they need. You have to be careful when hiring or buying. It’s easy to blow your home refurbishment budget on things you don’t need. Here is how to renovate on a budget.
Second-Hand
Classified ads and charity shops offer many second-hand goods. This is a great way to redecorate on a budget. Not only do you refurbish your home for cheap, but also help others declutter their homes or fund charitable causes.
When you shop around, remember every part of your home refurbishment including the garden and driveway. Get a range of useful, external materials including wood and stones. Also remember to set up email alerts so you’re the first to know when new products are offered. If the seller lives close by, get free delivery by picking up the goods yourself. Continue reading →
Replacing any large appliance is often a trying task. Refrigerators can be expensive, and they need to last for a long time, so selecting one shouldn’t be taken lightly as it will be with you for a while. Following these simple steps can help to make this endeavor less frustrating and hopefully help you pick a fridge that will make your life easier.
Take Plenty of Measurements
One of the worst feelings in the world is purchasing a fridge with which you fall in love, only to find out that it does not fit in its intended space. Instead of putting yourself in such a predicament, make sure to measure the height, width and depth of the space before heading to the store. If it is a small area, make sure you know exactly what every measurement is. Take all of the measurements with you, and discuss them with a consultant.
Research, Research, Research
After taking the measurements, you’ll know what size space with which you’re working. Start perusing websites and catalogs to see all that is available. Without knowing all of the options, you won’t be able to make the best choice. Additionally, thorough research provides the opportunity to compare prices amongst different stores and websites. Start the hunt early on so that you can keep an eye out for coupons, sales and specials, thereby allowing you to receive a discount on that new refrigerator. Continue reading →
Need an appliance for the kitchen? This guide outlines some things to consider before you invest in that appliance!
Size
We’ve all been there. Whether it was a mini fridge or a giant tumble dryer, choosing appliances for their size novelty is just as much a waste of valuable space and cash as not considering the size of your appliances at all. Whether you blend, juice, toast or boil, small appliances will work best on your kitchen worktop, preferably allowing you the space and navigation you need to do all of the other things you need to do in the kitchen. The worst culprits are juicers, blenders and microwaves, which are often bought on the spur of the moment, only to arrive home and eat up half of your worktop (not to mention valuable plug sockets). Bear size in mind if you want to continue appreciating your appliance after you have plugged it in and switched it on.
